Pond Pump Protector

Standalone dry-run & overload protection for submersible pumps.

Platform: PFA01

The PumpFuse PFA01 Pond Pump Protector safeguards submersible pumps in ponds, fountains, waterfalls, and koi ponds. It monitors power draw, detects dry running or blockages, and automatically shuts off the pump to prevent damage — all on its own, with simple LED alerts.

Works completely on its own. This model does not use the PumpFuse app and needs no Wi-Fi. Looking for app monitoring and remote alerts on the same hardware? See the Sump Pump Monitor or Internet Watchdog.

Why PumpFuse PFA01

How it works

The PFA01 protects your pump automatically in a few stages — no app, no Wi-Fi, and no configuration.

1. Training mode (60 seconds)

On installation or after a reset, the device enters Training Mode for 60 seconds. The pump runs normally while the device learns its average power consumption and sets thresholds for abnormal conditions. The blue LED blinks during training, then it switches automatically to Monitoring Mode.

2. Monitoring mode

The device continuously monitors power consumption in real time against the thresholds (average ± tolerances) learned during training. A steady blue LED means the pump is operating within normal parameters.

3. Abnormal power detection

4. Warning & automatic shut-off

On a sudden power drop or rise, the device enters Warning Mode with a steady red LED. If the issue persists for more than 30 seconds, it escalates and the relay automatically switches off, disconnecting power to protect the pump:

5. Clearing a warning

With the relay off and the pump disconnected, press the LED button once to clear the warning and return to Monitoring Mode. If the problem is still present, the device will re-enter Warning (or Underload/Overload) mode as needed.

6. Resetting & retraining

After addressing the cause, press and hold the LED button for 7–10 seconds to reset. The blue LED blinks as the device re-enters Training Mode and recalibrates its thresholds.

LED status guide

Steady blueNormal operation — pump is running within the learned power range.
Solid redWarning condition detected.
Slow blinking redUnderload (e.g. pump dry running) — power dropped below the learned range.
Fast blinking redOverload (e.g. blockage / clogged impeller) — power rose above the learned range.

Button

Single press: clear the current warning.   Press and hold 7–10 seconds: reset and re-run the 60-second training phase to relearn your pump.

Installation & setup

  1. Connect the PFA01 between the power source and the pump.
  2. Let the pump run normally during Training Mode (indicated by the blinking blue LED).
  3. Watch the LED indicators for warnings or alerts.
Tip: If warnings trigger too often and you believe they're false positives, re-run Training Mode by resetting the device (hold the button 7–10 seconds). This updates the thresholds to your pump's current performance for more accurate detection.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the PumpFuse app or Wi-Fi?

No. The Pond Pump Protector is completely standalone — it protects your pump and shows status via its LED with no app, account, or Wi-Fi. If you want phone alerts and history, choose the app-based Sump Pump Monitor.

How does it learn my pump?

On first run it trains for about 60 seconds to learn your pump's normal power draw, then monitors against that baseline. Hold the button 7–10 seconds any time to retrain.

What pumps is it for?

Submersible water pumps in ponds, fountains, waterfalls, koi ponds and circulation systems running on 120V.

Can I use it outdoors?

It isn't waterproof on its own, but it's compact enough to install inside a weatherproof enclosure.
